Feb 19 & 20

We started our "day off" with a tour of English Bay and Stanley Park. A really nice Slovak/Canadian woman took us on a walking tour. She talked about the history of the area. The tour ended at the Vancouver Aquarium.
This is the Inukshuk at English Bay. Again, the weather was spectacular...I just can't believe our luck.

There were many flowers and ducks and swans along the way. She showed us a Heron nesting colony too.

This is the entrance to the Vancouver Aquarium

Beluga Whale exhibit. The Vancouver Aquarium is a beautiful facility. You can get pretty close and get a good view of the animals.

A big cedar tree in Stanley Park. Unfortunately, we did not go to the centre of the park to see the bigger trees. There wasn't enough time and it was really far.

We did walk out to see the Totem Poles. They are very beautiful. Each one tells a story.
After the Totem Poles, we walked back to our hostel. It was very far - and our feet were sore!
Trip to Cypress Mountain-Feb 20
We were up before the sun to catch the bus downtown to the Waterfront Station where we caught the Seabus to Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver. This is where we got the Olympic Bus Network to Cypress Mountain. The buses were comfortable - mostly coaches and the trip up was smooth.

The weather was clear and bright - not too much wind and just perfect for being outside.

It's kind of hard to see but there is a skier flying in this picture. Aerials is a sport that is really difficult to appreciate until you see them flying down the mountain at 55+ km per hour and then flipping 30 to 40 feet in the air and then landing on a slope that is at a 23 degree pitch. These girls are crazy!!! It was very entertaining and we cheered our hears out for Valerie Bauer, the Canadian in the competition. Unfortunately, she placed 15th and did not qualify for the finals on Feb 24.

Trevor in front of the Aerial hill. The skiers have a choice of 6 ramps to jump from.

We found Quatchi!!! After long searches through the streets of Vancouver, we finally found Quatchi and Miga. Jocelyn was so happy.
Samantha at Cypress Mountain. As you can see the weather was picture perfect and sunglasses were the order of the day.

Ski jumper from Great Britain sharing a moment with her family after the competition. She did not qualify for the final. She was the only competitor from her country and as you can see by her competition bib, her world ranking is 23. There were only 23 competitors at this event. She was just happy to be at the Olympics and many people in the stands wanted their picture taken with her. She was a real celebrity even without a medal.
After the competition was over it was time to line up for the buses back to Lonsdale Quay, North Vancouver. There were many people and this took about an hour. It was about a 1.6 km walk.
Back at Lonsdale Quay we enjoyed the sights of the harbour. The tall ship you can see in the background is from Russia. It is at the Vancouver games to promote the next winter Olympics that will be held in Socchi, Russia in 2014. Anyone interested in going?

We headed back across the water via seabus. This is the view of North Vancouver from the harbour on the Seabus.

This is another Seabus carrying passengers the other way. These boats go back and forth across the harbour approximately every 15 minutes joining Vancouver and North Vancouver.

On our way back to the hostel we decided to try to get a look at the Olympic Flame. It was very, very crowded on the streets as it was Saturday evening and many families had come to the centre of town to do the same thing. We took this picture from a distance - through the very attractive fence.
